As a thank you to our loyal blog readers, PHS invites you to the Pop Up Garden to enjoy samples of local cheeses and breads from Fair Food, herbs from the garden itself, and samples of fresh Asian pears and Asian pear wine—all during a bucolic event on Wednesday, September 19 from 5 to 7 pm at 1905-15 Walnut Street, Philadelphia.

According to the Suarashii Kudamono website,While on business in Japan in 1973, American inventor and businessman Joel Spira is bestowed with a gift of the legendary fruit. Mr. Spira is enchanted with its incomparable flavor, but upon returning home, he finds it difficult to obtain. Undaunted by a challenge, he endeavors to grow his own Asian pears at home.

Back in Pennsylvania, Ruth Rodale Spira, ably equipped with a botany degree, joins him in undertaking a challenge: to create new and unique varieties of Asian pears. Working with experts in the United States and the Orient, the Spiras begin their own orchard situated in Eastern Pennsylvania’s fertile Lehigh Valley. Thus, Subarashii Kudamono, which means ‘wonderful fruit’ in Japanese, was born.”

Fair Food has been uniting local farmers with businesses and consumers for more than ten years. They promote the importance of family farms and create a year-round marketplace for fresh, local, and humane food products in the Greater Philadelphia region. They provide programs and services that contribute to a strong and sustainable local food system while supporting farmers, connecting consumers, educating the public, and celebrating the joys of local food.
