It was a bittersweet day for PHS when the Pops Up Garden at 20th and Market held its closing ceremonies. While the garden was always intended to be temporary, it’s amazing how quickly it “grew roots” on its Center City corner. As such, Monday’s ceremony was all about celebrating the garden’s positive effect on the community—and the capacity of a small space to make big change in a short amount of time.

The garden, which began life in May, produced more than 600 pounds of vegetables and herbs for City Harvest, a PHS program that provides fresh produce to families in need citywide. It was home to 10,000 ladybugs and more than 150,000 honeybees. It represents the collaborative effort of people, corporations, and communities, including more than 150 volunteers. I have never been so proud to be part of this great community effort of so many diverse individuals knelling in the dirt side by side with regular folks, corporate CEO’s , homeless, little old lady’s and the youth that showed up . I was so proud to be a PHIladelphian and proud of the work being created for the community. We are far ahead of Chicago already. Now lets get up to the roof tops and turn them into green oasis. It can be done it needs to be done so lets ‘getherdone’ Philadelphia!!!! Lets get back on the map blow New York and Washington away!!!! Thank you for letting me help and contribute.
